Dorel Juvenile Group recalled almost 800,000 child safety seats restraint systems on car seats sold nationwide at stores including Walmartand Costco because the harness locking and release button can sometimes stick and not lock, creating a risk the child isn't secure in the seat, theNational Highway Transportation Safety Administration announced.
The Cosco, Maxi-Cosi and Safety 1st restraint systems included in the recall are on certain Alpha Omega, Alpha Omega Elite, OnBoard TS, Mico, Enspira, Prospect, Vantage Point, Priori, Avenue and Uptown brand child safety seats, Terry Emerson, Dorel's quality assurance director said in a letter to NHTSA dated Feb. 10. A total of 794,247 seats are included in the recall. NHTSA lists the restraint systems included in the recall. Those car seat brands are sold nationwide and online in stores includingTarget and Amazon.com.
Emerson told the agency there have been no reports of injuries reported to the company from the lock issue. The restraint systems were made between May 1, 2008 and April 30, 2009 and have a center front adjuster as the harness adjustment mechanism. The company knew of 143 complaints about the adjustment mechanism not locking as of Dec. 10, 2010.
Registered owners will get a small tube of lubricant to use on the adjustment mechanism to prevent it from sticking. Other consumers can call Dorel at (866) 623-3139 or email the company. Consumers will need to provide the entire model number of the child restraint.
"This voluntary recall is being conducted out of an abundance of caution with no reported incidents or injuries," Dorel said in a statement. "Parents and caregivers are being provided detailed information on how to make the simple recommended adjustments to their car seat.
"Any recall is unfortunate, particularly those affecting children's products. Dorel Juvenile Group will continue to work every day to earn the trust of parents and caregivers and provide products that are of the highest quality, design and value."
Last fall, Britax recalled its Chaperone infant car seats after three babies suffered cuts when the chest harness clip broke. Another stalwart of baby products, Evenflo Co. Inc. also recalled its Maestro Combination Booster Seats after tests showed the seats could crack. ссылка
