Shopping для дочки (размер одежды - для новорожденных)

Пысы, это ещё только начало!

У нас нет стиральной машины дома, и приходится ходить в лондромат..

Если верить книге what to expect the first year, то у меня очень скудный гардероб, что радует, так как есть чем занятся!

What kind of bedding is best for my baby?

Expert AnswersGeorge Cohen, pediatrician

You'll want to provide your baby with bedding that is both comfortable and perfectly safe.

Start by choosing a safe crib that meets modern crib safety standards. If it's borrowed or bought used, be extra careful: Read up on how to buy a crib to be sure it's acceptable. And select a firm mattress (a soft one is a suffocation hazard) that fits tightly in the crib. You should not be able to fit two fingers between the mattress and the side of the crib.

Bumper pads

aren't necessary, and if they're puffy, they're hazardous. If you decide to use bumper pads, choose ones that are thin and fasten them securely to the crib so they can't come loose. Make sure the bumper ties don't dangle into the crib.

Use a flannel-backed, waterproof mattress pad, which is safer, cooler, and more comfortable than a plain plastic or rubber cover. Cover the pad with a fitted sheet made of cotton. Flannel will provide extra warmth and comfort in the cold winter months. Make sure the sheet fits snugly around the mattress and won't come loose while your baby is sleeping.

While it's tempting to tuck your infant in with cozy-looking blankets, soft bedding is a suffocation hazard and has been strongly linked to SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). To keep your baby warm, it's best to use sleepers or infant sacks or pajamas with feet rather than comforters or blankets. If you decide to use a blanket, choose a thin one and tuck it in securely around the foot and sides of the mattress, reaching only up to your baby's chest. Tuck it in under her arms, not under her chin.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and the National Institutes of Child Health (NICHD) recommend that you take all pillows, comforters, quilts, stuffed toys, sheepskins, and other soft objects out of your baby's crib. Don't let your child sleep with a pillow until she's older than age 2 and has made the transition to a bed.

Never use infant cushions that have a soft fabric covering or are loosely filled with plastic foam beads or pellets. These cushions have been linked to suffocation and banned by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Also make sure there are no strings, which can cause strangulation, on nightclothes or bedding.

Finally, always place your baby on her back to sleep in the safe sleeping environment you've provided. Studies show that babies who sleep on their back are less likely to die of SIDS. And of course, you'll want to follow all safety precautions for bedding and sleeping arrangements when your baby is away from home, too, whether she's at childcare or at Grandma's.

What's the best sleepwear for my baby?

Expert AnswersDeborah Lin-Dyken, pediatric sleep disorders expert

You'll want to dress your baby in sleepwear that's safe and comfortable and that helps her maintain a good body temperature.

Contrary to what you might hear, baby sleepwear doesn't have to be flame resistant. Soft, breathable natural fabrics like cotton are fine, but they must be used in a garment that fits snugly to be safe. By U.S. law, as of June 2000, children's sleepwear must be labeled as either snug-fitting (so it won't easily catch fire) or flame resistant.

Avoid ribbons, strings, ties, and other decorative items that could get wrapped around your baby and pose a choking hazard.

As for how much to bundle up your baby, don't overdo it. Overheating is a risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Start by keeping the room at a temperature that's comfortable, not hot — 70 to 72 degrees is a good range. Then dress your baby for bed in whatever you're comfortable in plus one layer. So if you feel fine in one layer, put two layers on your baby.

Booties are a good way to keep her toes warm when it's chilly, and, since much of her body heat escapes from her head, a skull cap is also a good idea. Don't cover her up with big, fluffy blankets or comforters, though, because these could wind up over her head and lead to suffocation or SIDS. Opt for a sleep sack instead.

During warm weather your baby can sleep without extra layers. Just keep her away from direct air conditioning vents and drafty windows.

Опасности для новорожденного дома

What are the biggest hidden household dangers for newborns?

Expert AnswersMartin N. Simenc, child safety expert

It doesn't take much work to keep a newborn safe. At this age, a baby's too small to get into much trouble on his own. He's not ready to stick buttons in his mouth or climb out of his crib, and it will be quite a few months before he starts toddling toward the stairs.

Still, it's not too early to make safety a top priority. Even before your baby arrives, you can learn how to handle the hidden dangers for newborns.

Safe sleeping: To reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), newborns should sleep on their back on a firm mattress. Don't let your baby sleep with anything soft and cushy like a pillow, sheepskin, comforter, or plush toy.

A warm one-piece outfit, or sleeper, is a safer choice than a blanket, which could cover his head and restrict his ability to breathe. Using crib bumpers is discouraged for the same reason.

The mattress should fit tightly so your baby can't get trapped between it and the side of crib. Make sure that the crib doesn't have any missing or broken parts or any gaps greater than the width of a soda can.

Safe diaper changes: Even the smallest babies can find a way to roll off a changing table if left unattended. Buy a table with safety straps or add straps to your current table.

Even if your baby is strapped in, you should never leave him alone. (That phone call can wait.) You can avoid the risk of falling entirely by changing your baby on the floor using a receiving blanket or an unfolded cloth diaper as a changing pad.

Find out more about childproofing your nursery.

Safe bathing: Whether you wash your baby in a baby bathtub, a sink, or a tub, never leave him unattended for a second. Once he's sitting up, a bath seat may seem like a handy safety device, but it can create a false sense of security. Hundreds of babies have drowned after tipping over or slipping out of their bath seats.

Get more bath safety tips.

Here's how to protect your baby from other unexpected hazards:

Keep heavy or breakable objects out of reach. Move objects such as picture frames and ceramic figurines away from the changing table and crib so your child can't knock them over. Place baby furniture away from hazards. Keep cribs and changing tables away from windows, window cords, and hanging mobiles to prevent your child from getting tangled, suffocating, or falling out the window. Secure unstable furniture. Make sure tall or unstable pieces of furniture are securely braced to the wall, especially if you live in an earthquake-prone area. Prevent falls. When you have a baby in your arms, a simple trip or fall can be disastrous. To help prevent falls, use lots of nightlights, put fresh carpet grips under your rugs, keep clutter off the floor, and fix or install stair railings.

Make your home fire-safe. Place functional smoke detectors in each bedroom, in the adjacent hallway, and on each level of your home. If your smoke detectors are more than ten years old, replace them. You should have at least one fire extinguisher on each floor of your house and a carbon monoxide detector next to the sleeping areas.
